Chapter C18 · Interactive Course
Your everyday AI toolkit
Build a routine you will still follow when busy.
Core Learning Concept
Choose a small real-world use by starting with the task. Identify why AI might help, what input you may provide, how you will judge the result, and when to use another method. Keep the routine simple enough to repeat: choose, brief, minimize, check, and decide.
What You’ll Learn in This Chapter
-
Choose from the task outward
Select AI, a conventional tool or human help based on the actual need.
Begin with the kind of result required. Brainstorming benefits from options, calculation requires correct arithmetic, and a consequential personal decision may need qualified expertise. Judge a method by checkability and the cost of error. The most familiar AI app is not automatically the best starting point.
-
Compare on your own examples
Evaluate candidate tools on the same representative task.
Representative examples resemble your actual work, including awkward cases. Give each candidate the same inputs and judge against criteria written beforehand. A small trial is useful local evidence, not proof of universal superiority. Record failures as well as successes so the comparison informs a practical choice.
-
Check the practical limits
Inspect the limits that affect a planned use before relying on a service.
Practical limits include supported files, input size, usage allowances, account permissions, and output capabilities. Check the ones your task depends on before relying on a service. A paid plan may change limits without removing them. Use current product information rather than assuming an advertised feature covers every case.
-
Recheck after a change
Re-evaluate an established workflow when a model, setting or product changes.
AI products update silently behind the scenes. An update can introduce regressions where prompts that previously worked suddenly fail. Keep a small test set of known examples to re-verify your automated workflows after product updates.
-
Separate evidence from hype
Distinguish a demonstrated capability from a prediction or marketing claim.
A measured claim names a result and the conditions of the test. A prediction concerns a future outcome; an undefined slogan may not specify anything testable yet. Ask what was measured, against what comparison, and on which cases. An impressive phrase is a reason to seek evidence, not a result itself.
-
Keep a simple personal routine
Summarize a repeatable process for using AI thoughtfully.
A useful routine should still work when you are busy. Choose suitable help, state the task, provide only needed information, check the important results, and decide what to use. Keep a few representative examples for future checks. Familiarity with a tool should not replace inspecting consequential outputs.
-
Choose your next real use
Select an everyday task, explain why AI would or would not help, specify permitted input, and name a check you can actually perform.
-
Your personal AI playbook
For a community activity, decide where AI helps, limit any delegated action, review evidence and permissions, and state when to seek human help.
